A completed ProtecTube™ assembly.

The Subsurface Dune Protection System (ProTecTube™) consists of a wedge-shaped, multi-cell, sand-filled geotextile container. The wedge-shape and slope allows for wave attenuation and accretion of sand on the dune surface being protected. The container can be divided into cells so that each cell presents a particular wave impacting surface as the cells increase in height as they progress landward. The cells are formed by walls of impermeable material for filling with water in rapid emergency installations and can later be filled with wet sand as the water is displaced for a permanent installation. The impermeable walls cause the sand to remain wet substantially increasing weight of the container. The ProTecTube can be thought of as a 700 ton sand bag. The substantial length, width and weight of the container provide significant resistance to storm wave forces.
